Some careers are seemingly easy to understand because they are quite common, but there are those that most people know very little about until they actually encounter someone doing the job. Elevator mechanics fall into this category. The majority of the public assume that the machinery behind the doors is relatively straightforward.
Well, it's not, as it combines electrical systems, mechanical components, hydraulics, and so much more. It's therefore safe to say that aspiring elevator mechanics have a lot to know before getting started. And here are the most notable bits.
1. System Diagnosis Will Be More Important Than You'd Initially Expect
This one catches many new mechanics unawares. You will often encounter cases where a component shows a fault, only to realise, after close inspection, that it's a totally different issue. When a controller displays a door-related fault, for instance, this doesn't mean that you should rush to replace different door components. Such an error can mean something totally different, like an issue involving wiring, or even a mechanical obstruction.
This is why expertly written elevator mechanic courses emphasise the importance of systematic troubleshooting. This means understanding what the system is supposed to be doing, what it's actually doing, and where the difference comes in.
2. Understanding the Door System Will Benefit You a Great Deal
An undeniable fact is that the majority of elevator service calls are associated with door problems. But these aren't always mechanical failures. Yet many new elevator mechanics ignore this reality, since elevator doors look deceptively simple from inside the car. When you look at the entire system more closely, however, there are so many components, including tracks, rollers, locks, sensors, etc.
This is the main reason why elevator doors are more complicated than you'd think. So, when a problem shows up, what you are thinking might be the cause may probably not even be anywhere in the picture. So, one of your first goals when getting into this career should be to take enough time to get in-depth knowledge of this system.
3. Keep in Mind That This Is a Heavily Regulated Job
Your technical ability is vital for success in your everyday tasks, but there is one thing you must not forget. You will be working within a heavily regulated field with requirements that may involve the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, OSHA requirements, the National Electrical Code, and several others. Besides, even manufacturers typically have installation guidelines and requirements that you must follow to guarantee optimal performance and maximum safety.
The exact requirements you should follow may vary depending on your jurisdiction and the equipment involved. So, even if you know how to make these machines operate correctly, it's still important to ensure that your work satisfies the applicable requirements. This is where good documentation comes in. Recording information about the condition and service history of an elevator can save you a lot of trouble down the road.
4. You Will Need Top-Tier Communication Skills
Elevator mechanics don't work alone. You will interact with electricians, general contractors, building owners, property managers, inspectors, and even members of the public. And while some of these people fully understand elevator systems and how they work, many of them will only make sense of everyday language, like when you say " the elevator is broken".
This is where your communication skills come into play, as you want to be able to explain technical problems in simple language. Such an approach makes it easier for the involved persons to know the next action they should take, or how to collaborate with you to ensure the problem is fixed in the best possible way.
